Reax to fishery

The province has approved the Lake Nipissing Fisheries Management plan — which confirms steps already taken to protect the walleye population in the lake.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says the walleye fishery is stressed on Lake Nipissing and the plan includes three sport fishing regulation changes implemented last year to support walleye recovery.

They include zero possession of walleye less than 46 cm, the bass season now opens on the third Saturday of June instead of the fourth and there’s higher perch daily catch limits.

Overall, officials say the plan includes actions to ensure a healthy lake environment, conserve the diversity of the fish community and provide opportunities to contribute to the social and economic well-being of the surrounding area.

The plan was developed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry with advice from the Lake Nipissing Fisheries Management Plan Advisory Committee and the public.
