Melina Levasseur Gymtrix BeamSome impressive results for a local Gymtrix athlete and several North Bay Y Titans after recent events.

Plus, the Nipissing Lakers women’s basketball team has signed two players that the coaching staff say will provide experience and leadership to the team.

First, a North Bay Gymtrix athlete was less than three tenths from a gold medal score on balance beam at the Gymnastics Ontario Provincial Championship recently in Windsor.

13 year old Melina Levasseur (pictured) placed 7th in the event with a score of 9.6.

The Algonquin student was also 11th on Floor Exercise and 12th on Vault.

Coach Tara Alger says, “There were 70 gymnasts in Levasseur’s division this season. This is an amazing accomplishment considering the adversity Melina faced this season.

She had a few untimely injuries during the season, including a broken finger from playing basketball just before her final qualifying competition.

Levasseur instead attended a last minute make-up qualifier in Windsor two weeks before Championship and won the qualifying meet.

 

titanslogo1Meantime, several medals for North Bay Y Titans at a recent long course swim meet in Sudbury.

Five Titans won their races while five more had second place finishes and two won bronze.

Several other swimmers had 4th, 5th and 6th place finishes while a few also posted personal best times.

Meantime, Megan Tom got her provincial pre-requisite in the 800 free style, Ryan Tom achieved a festival qualifying time in his 400 free style and Evan Kilroy attained his long-course festival time in the 100 breast stroke.

 

NU_LAKERS_RGBAnd officials with the Nipissing Lakers women’s basketball team say they’re adding some leadership and experience.

Their latest signings, Taylor-Rae Cote and Rachel Jaworowicz are two players who have post-secondary experience.

Cote spent three years with Mount Allison, a team that was ranked 8th in the country last season.

Jaworowicz was OCAA Rookie of the Year at Fanshawe, won a silver medal at the OCAA championship and was named to the West All-Star team in her second season.

Coach Marg Jones says,  “Taylor Rae and Rachel will add immediate leadership and experience to our roster,”

She goes on to say,  “Both young women have had excellent playing careers to date at their respective schools and have experienced success in league play, playoffs and Nationals. They bring with them an expectation of success on the court”.
