Red Cross NepalThere are a number of relief agencies involved in providing disaster assistance to the people of Nepal, in the wake of last weekend’s devastating earthquake,  and local residents can help support those efforts too.

Canadian Red Cross Community Coordinator David St Georges says money donated right now will go towards essential needs like food, clothing, medicine and shelter.

He says those efforts will continue on in the weeks and months ahead.

There’s also an added benefit with the way they offer assistance.

St Georges says they spend the money as close to the affected area as possible, which not only helps those in need, but it helps to stimulate the local economy there too.

Meantime, St Georges says they also encourage people creating their own local fundraisers to support the disaster assistance program.

All eligible donations made by May 25th towards relief efforts in Nepal will be matched by the government of Canada.
