Both the Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team and the men’s hockey team have added players with a wealth of experience in major competition.

First, the men’s volleyball team has signed Jason Cannon – who has played the last four years at St. Thomas University. He was named male athlete of the year twice and volleyball MVP three times during his career with the Tommies. Cannon says “I’m looking forward to playing against some of the best players in the country and being challenged every night whether it’s in a game or practice.”

He also helped the Tommies win two conference championships in the CCAA. Lakers head coach Eric Yung said because of his accomplishments, his ability on the court and his attitude off of it, Cannon is a great addition. He adds “Cannon will improve our serve receive and will cause other teams trouble on the service line. We believe Jason will make immediate impact within our program both on and off the court.”

Secondly, the men’s hockey team has signed a goaltender out of the QMJHL.

Former Drummondville and Chicoutimi net minder Domenic Graham will join the team. The 6-foot goalie piled up 71 wins over his for years in Quebec Major Junior.

He says “I’m very competitive and kind of look at Quick, Rask and Mrazek as NHLers with the same style,” he explained. “I have to win. I play like that and practices like that. CIS hockey is challenging and you have to have a professional kind of attitude to play and go to school.”

Meantime, Head Coach Mike McParland says “We are very glad that Domenic has chosen Nipissing to continue his education as well as continuing his hockey dream. Domenic has shown in 4 years in the Q that he is very capable.”
