Torch run

We’ve had the Special Olympics Ontario Winter Games here in North Bay recently, and it’s just one of many events that rely on year round fundraising efforts.

Another annual fundraiser took place today – the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Ontario.

A number of Police Officers, community members and Special Olympics Athletes ran from the police headquarters to the Kiwanis band shell at the waterfront.

One of those athletes is Peter Washington who participates in track and field and soccer. He talked about why he enjoys being a part of Special Olympics and why donating is a good cause.

He says “Just to get out and get exercise, and have fun. All the money goes back to Special Olympics and raises money for all the sports.”

Bill Hagborg is the Vice Chair of the Police Services Board, and he says they always appreciate the support from the community for this fundraiser.

He says “it’s amazing in North Bay, every time you ask people to step up and support a cause and make donations, they are there. The 2015 Winter Special Olympics in North Bay were a good example of that.”

Constable Merv Shantz says this is an annual event across the world.

He says they are proud supports of the Special Olympics, and have even been recognized for their efforts. He says “we’ve won awards at international conferences for the fundraising we do here in Ontario. So we’re proud of our efforts.”

Shantz says they had officers not just from North Bay, but also Sudbury and the Military Police were taking part.
