The Powassan Voodoos, and Nipissing Lakers took to the ice on Saturday night, while the Lakers and the Canadore Panthers also went to battle on the hard court in basketball and volleyball action.

Meantime, we start with a preview of today’s North Bay Battalion game against the Barrie Colts – which you can catch on Country-600 CKAT at 1:35pm for the pregame show. 
The North Bay Battalion are back on home ice for the first time in 14 days as they host the Barrie Colts this afternoon.

Battalion Remembrance Day SaluteThe Battalion are coming off a 5-2 win over Sudbury on Friday night, and they will be wearing their special camouflage sweaters during the game for the Remembrance Day Salute.

Active and retired military personnel can purchase tickets at a special rate of $11 for the game which begins at 2 p.m.

Pre-game ceremonies will take place featuring active and retired military members from 22 Wing North Bay, the 33 Service Battalion and the local Royal Canadian Legions.

The first 1,000 fans to Memorial Gardens will receive rally towels.

 

 
The Powassan Voodoos are now 17-2 on the year after a 2-0 win over the Rayside-Balfour Canadians on Saturday night at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Goaltender Garrett Forrest stopped all 41 shots that cam his way.

It’s the third straight victory for Powassan after dropping two in a row last week.

Tyler Gervais-Rolfe and Michael Silveri scored for the Voodoos who will host the Espanola Express next Saturday at 7pm.

 

 

In OUA Hockey – the Nipissing Lakers womens team were shut out 1-0 at the hands of the Laurentian Voyageurs. Goaltender Jackie Rochefort made 32 saves in net for the Lakers in the loss.

The Lakers also fell 2-1 to the Voyaguers during the season opener. The Lakers are back in action next Saturday, on home ice versus Guelph.

On the men’s side the Lakers defeated U of T by a score of 6-3 for their fourth straight win.

Erik Robichaud and Colin Campbell scored twice, while Jacob McDowell and Guillaume Naud added singles. Chad Thibodeau had four assists. Mackenzie Keirstead added two assists and Kirk Rafuse earned the win, playing 40 mins, after taking over for Domenic Graham.

In OUA mens basketball the Nipissing Lakers fell 69-57 to the Queen’s Gaels. The Lakers led 23-18 after the first quearter, but the Gaels turned the tables in the second with a 16-8 run to close out the half.

Nipissing only trailed by five in the fourth quarter, but were unable to pick up a key bucket down the stretch. Marcus Lewis put up 15 points for the Lakers, while Kalil Langston and Mike Angenent added nine each.

The Lakers are on the road next weekend, facing Lakehead Friday night in Thunder Bay and Saturday in Guelph.

In OUA womens basketball the Nipissing Lakers also lost to the Queen’s Gaels by a score of 71-42. Nipissing and Queens were tied at 17-17 after the first quarter, but the Gaels started to pull away after that point, leading by nine at the half, and extending their lead to 47-27 within the first five minutes of the third.

Claire Abbott led the Lakers attack with 10 points and Mackenzie Bahm scored eight for Nipissing. The Lakers are on the road next weekend, facing Lakehead Friday night, before heading to Guelph for a matchup on Saturday night.

In OUA Volleyball, the Nipissing Lakers mens team won their second straight game 3-1 over the York Lions, and now sit tied for third in the OUA standings with a 4-3 record. The Lakers and the Lions traded wins in the first two sets, while Nipissing won 25-19 in the third and 25-22 in the fourth.

Offensively, Lyndon Sonego stepped up with 14 kills to the Lakers, while Cam Branch added 11 in the win. Jack Peckham also earned seven.

The Lakers are on the road next weekend to face U of T and Ryerson.

In OUA women’s volleyball, the Lakers fell 3-1 to the York Lions. The Lakers opened up the game with a win in the first set, but the Lions responded with three straight victories to take the match.

Tracy Hammerton had a strong game offensively, recording 12 kills, while Erika Lapierre picked up 10.

Nipissing is on the road next, heading to Toronto to face U of T and Ryerson Friday and Saturday.

In OCAA Basketball the Canadore Panthers lost to George Brown 76-60. The Panthers are back on the court today when they visit Centennial.

Canadore basketballIn Volleyball action, the mens Panthers team lost to Durham College 3-2, while the women won 3-0 also against Durham.
