bike cop

North Bay Police have been busy since early this month on bicycle patrol.

They have two officers who are patrolling various parts of the city including the downtown and the waterfront and will continue to do so until the end of August.

One of the officers is Cst. John Cook.

He says there are a number of things they are watching for from other cyclists including whether they stop at stop signs, stop at red lights and wait for green and whether they are riding their bikes through cross walks.

As for pedestrians he says in some cases they do have the right of way to cross but they should watching both ways anyway so they don’t get hit.

He says a bicycle is a vehicle and the person that’s riding it can be fined under the Highway Traffic Act just like the motorist can.

Cook says cyclists in the evening should have proper working brakes, a red light in the rear, a white light in the front and you should be wearing reflective clothing.

Cook suggests cyclists not put ear buds on when they are going somewhere.

He says it’s too dangerous as they can’t hear the traffic.

Cook says there are places he can go to that the cruiser can’t like some parts of the trails or back alleys.
