A few updates from City Council on items we previously told you about.

First, a rezoning request for a development involving a new hotel and two restaurants on Oak Street West was approved by full council last night (Monday).

Also given the green light was councillor Mike Anthony‘s motion for staff to meet with the Humane Society to discuss a potential location for a second off leash dog park.

It’s been a year since the first one opened off Premier Road at Champlain Park.

Councillor Chris Mayne, who seconded the motion says the first park has been a success. “Anyone who has used it has seen how beneficial it is for their own dogs and i’m sure people in other parts of the community envy West Ferris, so I think it’s a great idea to try and introduce another one to another part of the city if we can find a suitable location.”

Meantime, council approved $4.5-million in asphalt resurfacing for this year.

The price is up about 13 percent but Chair of Engineering and Works Councillor Tanya Vrebosch says there’s a reason for it.

She says they’ve asked for a better quality of asphalt and different processes to see if the roads can last a little bit longer.

Vrebosch says because they put the extra money in for asphalt resurfacing they’re still able to do more roads than previous years, but not as much as first anticipated because of the cost increase.
