Rota Rally 2(file photo)

MP Anthony Rota is waiting to see what the Senate comes back with when it comes to Ottawa’s assisted dying legislation.

Rota supported the bill in the House of Commons.

He says, “often the Senate does come up with some ideas that are not always mainstream and sometimes very good, sometimes a little bit avante guard or out there. I’m really looking forward to what they come back with.”

The most frequent objection from the Senate, so far, concerned the government’s insistence that only those who are near death will be eligible for medical assistance to end their lives.

Many senators say that flies in the face of the Supreme Court ruling and the charter of rights.

The Senate has already said the bill won’t be put to a vote by Monday’s court-imposed deadline of June 6th.

Rota says, “It’s not an easy topic to begin with, so even if they do take a little bit longer, I’d rather they do it right.”
