City Council is looking at making the speed limit 60 km/h up Airport Hill.

Right now there’s a stretch of Airport Road, from just past Bennett Street to just past Surrey Drive, where it’s 70 km/h and council wants to reduce that limit to 60 km/h.

Chair of Engineering and Works Councillor Tanya Vrebosch says there have been a lot of accidents in that area and this is one way of reducing them.

She says 35 per cent of the accidents in that stretch have been attributed to when people turn off Surrey Drive onto Airport Road.

Other accidents have been caused by distracted driving, weather conditions and wildlife.

Verbosch says other options for council to consider include a barrier at the left hand turn and traffic lights.

A Council committee has already approved the reduction and full council will have it’s say at the next regular meeting on July 25th.

Vrebosch says if council goes ahead, police will be asked to conduct enforcement in the area.
