The idea behind MPP Vic Fedeli’s private member’s bill is to reduce distracted driving.

He has re-introduced his Safe Texting Zones Act to create texting zones along any part of the King’s Highway.

That could include commuter parking lots, transit stations, rest stops or other areas.

There would also be signage.

Before the legislature was prorogued, Fedeli’s bill passed second reading with all-party support, it also received support from the CAA and the Insurance Bureau of Canada..

“Designating specific texting zones would be especially helpful in reducing distracted driving on highways in rural and Northern areas where cell service can be intermittent, and there are long distances between rest stops,” Fedeli added.

“I have re-introduced this legislation because the Safe Texting Zones Act sends a clear message to drivers that there is no longer an excuse to endanger themselves and those they share the road with,” Fedeli said.
