Canadore College is receiving $5.6-million in federal funding for a new, fully integrated Village Living,Wellness and Learning Centre.

That announcement today (Friday) from MP Anthony Rota.

Rota says this project suits the governments innovation agenda.

He says the government is not afraid to do things differently for the future so students can benefit.

The college says ‘The Village’ project will combine academics, lifestyle, research and community.

President George Burton says they will have a new academic building which will house the colleges health, science and wellness programs.

He says this building will allow them to bring the best of medicine into one complex and that includes western, indigenous and healing medicine and eastern medicine as well.

He says the ground breaking will be next year and the project will be completed in 2018.

Burton points out phase 2 of the project will include a seniors retirement complex right on the college campus.

There’s also an $800,000 investment from the provincial government too.

Canadore College will contribute an additional $6.1 million for a total investment of $12.5 million.

Infrastructure funding announced for Nipissing University

Earlier this week, MP Anthony Rota announced the federal and provincial governments are helping Nipissing University with $962,000 in funding.

The money, along with Nipissing’s $300,000 share, will pay for a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system at the Education Centre.

Rota says the federal cash is being made available through the Post Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment fund.

The total cost of the project is $1,200,000 with $662,000 from the feds and $300,000 from the province.

University president Dr Mike DeGagne says the university needs significant repairs and a new HVAC system will match the top level research and innovation going on at the university.
