A Council Committee is recommending to increase the tipping fees at the Merrick Landfill.

If council approves the recommendation the new fee will be 3 dollars higher at $93.00 per tonne on January 1st next year and another 3 dollars to $96.00 on January 1st of 2018.

Councillor Derek Shogren points out the fee at the landfill is 20 dollars lower in Sudbury but it varies throughout Ontario with higher fees in Barrie and Orillia but lower in Timmins.

He adds there’s another fee they’ll be instituting in April of next year if council gives the green light.

Shogren says there will be a 20 dollar charge per mattress dropped off at the landfill.

Shogren says they want people to recycle more so they can extend the life of the landfill.

And one way they’re doing that is by by increasing fees to use it.

Councillor Sheldon Forgette says businesses aren’t part of the city’s recycle program right now because of the expense to the city but it may be something worth talking about.

Meantime, the city isn’t doing much with the user fees in 2017.

So says Forgette.

He says there will be some minor ones imposed but nothing major.

He says it’s going to be pretty much status quo.

Forgette says the city reviews the fees every 4 years and the last review was done in 2014.
