The North Bay Battalion fought back to tie things up three times on Sunday afternoon against Hamilton, but lost 5-4 to the Bulldogs in a shootout.

Head Coach Stan Butler says the team needs to play smarter and start the games with more intensity.

“They scored in less that 2 minutes into the game, so that defeated that purpose,” he said.  “But, like I said to the kids just don’t let your teammates down. You gotta figure out a way to do what you need to do in order to be successful.”

Brett Hahkala, Brad Chenier, Max Kislinger and Steve Harland scored for North Bay.

The Battalion are 9th in the Eastern Conference standings with 6 games left in the regular season, trailing Niagara by two points and Sudbury by three.

Next up, North Bay is home to Sudbury on Wednesday night.

 

The Great North Midget League championship series is knotted at a win apiece.

This after the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves scored a 4-3 win over the North Bay AAA Trappers in game two Sunday evening at Memorial Gardens.

Ryan Mills, Joe Whittet and Eric Mondoux scored for North Bay in the loss.

Game three goes next Saturday in Sudbury.

 

The Powassan Voodoos wrapped up a northern road trip Sunday with a 5-2 win in Timmins.

Tyson Gilmore and Gabriel Rheault each scored twice for the Voodoos with Ryan Theriault adding a single.

Powassan, which had already clinched top spot in the NOJHL, wraps up the regular season Wednesday with a game against French River in Noelville.

 

In OUA women’s hockey, Nipissing will take on Guelph in the championship final.

The single-game, winner-take-all McCaw Cup final will be played this coming Saturday in Guelph.

Nipissing swept Toronto, two games to none, in their semifinal while Guelph won their series with Waterloo two games to one.

The Gryphons finished first in the regular season standings with Nipissing second.
The season is over for the Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team.

They lost 3-1 to Guelph in the OUA quarterfinals on Saturday.

Three out of the four sets were decided by two points.

 

The OFSAA “AAA” boys basketball championship begins today in North Bay.

Algonquin is hosting the event with games being played at Nipissing and Canadore.

16 teams are taking part including the St Joseph-Scollard Hall Bears.

Their first game is at noon today against a school from Toronto.

Meantime, SJSH is also playing in the OFSAA Girls AAA volleyball championship in Barrie.

Their first game is this morning against a Toronto school.

Franco Cite is playing in the “A” girls volleyball event in Welland.
