The local road safety committee has launched a pilot project.

The Northern Injury Prevention coordinator Pat Cliche says in many cases people involved in collisions refuse to go to the hospital and they may not know they have a concussion.

The local committee has asked first responders to hand out cards detailing concussions symptoms.

She says the first responders aren’t diagnosing concussions and this is a education awareness initiative only.

North Bay Police, OPP and North Bay Fire and Emergency Services will all be distributing the information cards, with the number of cards distributed to be tallied at the city’s collision reporting centre.

Cliche says a project like this is already underway in Windsor and another is planned for Thunder Bay.

Symptoms of a concussion can appear right after an accident or be delayed for hours or days and can take up to 10 days to resolve.

They include seizures, repeated vomiting, loss of consciousness and slurred speech.
