Canada is set to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and a local military member will be there.

In fact, Corporal Francis Roller with 51 Aerospace Control and Warning (Operational Training) Squadron at 22 Wing CFB North Bay will be directly involved.

“I’m going to be part of the honour guard at the ceremony for the 100th anniversary for the Battle of Vimy Ridge at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial. I’m also going to be on parade at the Hill 70 memorial,” he says.

Corporal Roller is looking forward to being there.

“I’m just really excited to go, it’s going to be a really humbling experience and definitely a highlight for my career,” he added.

“Due to his outstanding instructional and operational performance within 51 Squadron in support of NORAD, and his support to community events such as Relay For Life, Corporal Roller was an exceptional choice to represent the RCAF at the Vimy Ridge Centennial Ceremonies in France, “ said Major Shawn Guilbault, 51 Aerospace Control and Warning (Operational Training) Squadron, 22 Wing/CFB North Bay.

3,600 Canadians lost their lives in the Battle of Vimy Ridge, fought between April 9th and 12th, 1917.

Over 7,000 more were wounded.

The Canadian Corps won the battle against the Germans, capturing a highly defended ridge that allies had attempted to take.
