A reminder from North Bay Fire to never try and put out a grease or oil-based fire with water.

This after crews report a recent spike in the number of kitchen fires.

The latest happened yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) around 4:30 pm on the 800 block of Memorial Drive.

Officials say a woman suffered burns to her upper body while trying to put out the fire, and was taken to hospital.

North Bay Fire says kitchen fires are the number 1 cause of residential fires in Canada.

Kitchen fires due to cooking oil or grease igniting into flames cause the fastest-spreading and most destructive type of residential fire.
