Today is the National Day of Mourning and local officials are marking the occasion.

The North Bay and District Labour Council is hosting a ceremony to honour workers who have died or who have been injured while working.

The ceremony takes place at North Bay City Hall at 10:30.

Labour Council President Henri Giroux says a tragic work place disaster in the mining industry will be remembered.

He says they’ll be recognizing the Westray Mine Disaster which happened about 25 years ago.

The mine had been open less than 8 months before the explosion that claimed 26 lives.

Giroux says more needs to be done to prevent injuries and fatalities while at work.

Also today, the Executive Vice President of the Ontario Federation of Labour will speak about the importance of preventing workplace injuries and fatalities.
