Unemployment was up slightly in the area last month, according to the latest data from Stats Canada.

The jobless figure was 8.2 per cent in May.

That’s up from 7.7 per cent in May 2016.

The figure is within the standard error so it’s not deemed statistically significant.

Employment, meantime, was down 1.6 per cent to 54.8.

The labour force was down about 600 people.

The numbers include the City of North Bay, Callander, Bonfield and East Ferris.

Nationally, the unemployment rate edged up to 6.6 per cent, a rise of 0.1 of a percentage point, as more people entered the job market searching for work.
