Training camp is underway for the Powassan Voodoos.

The defending NOJHL champs undertook fitness testing and a pair of evening skates on Thursday.

Over 30 players took part in day one of camp with the numbers varying throughout camp as players head off to major junior training camps.

For Beau Moyer, the new head coach of the Voodoos, the first day of main camp was a memorable one.

“It was great to have such a great core group bring a solid effort and being welcoming to the new players, seeing new players like Israels, Dickson and Gilberds and Mondoux skate with our key returning pieces,” said Moyer. “The group brought lots of intensity and were very attentive to new details and structure. The defense made plays and was active getting used to being a consistent fourth piece to the offense.”

Voodoos GM Chris Dawson was impressed as well with the way the veterans meshed with some of the new young players.

“There was a very positive vibe in the dressing room to open camp,” stated Dawson. “The veterans seemed energized and ready to go, while the rookies came out trying to make an impression. It was a great first day of training camp.”

The Voodoos are back on the ice this afternoon (Friday) for a scrimmage at 2:30 pm at the Powassan Sportsplex and have three exhibition games next week.

On Wednesday, Powassan travels to Noelville to play French River, the Kingston Voyageurs visit Powassan next Thursday afternoon (2pm) and on Friday afternoon (2pm) the Voodoos entertain French River.
