Today is the first day of school and the Chair of the Let’s Remember Adam campaign is urging drivers to stop for the school bus.

Pierre Ranger’s brother Adam was killed 17 years ago when a truck failed to stop for his school bus.

He says it’s up to drivers to make sure kids get to and from school safely.

“You wait longer in a drive-thru line-up waiting to get your coffee than you will waiting for a school bus. It baffles me why people can’t take the time to do this, or realize why it’s so important,” he says.

As for last year, Pierre says the start of the 2016/17 school year was not a good one for incidents, with a high number that continued as the year went on.

“It was just very frustrating to keep trying to spread this message and to see more and more people ignoring it, and putting their own personal time before the safety of a child,” he adds.

Meantime, the North Bay Police Service is starting a back to school traffic enforcement campaign today (Tuesday)

Each weekday through September 15th, officers will be making sure drivers are stopping for school buses that have their red stop lights on and ensuring speed limits are followed in Community Safety Zones.

They’re targeting peak hours when traffic congestion is at its highest: from 7 pm to 9 am and from 3 pm to 5 pm.
