If one city councillor has his way there could be some changes coming to the municipal by law that governs election signs.

Derek Shogren wants the date that signs are allowed on public property to be later in the year.

He says signs will be allowed in May but he wants that pushed back to when the close of officially filing nomination papers is and that’s a lot closer to election day.

“Everybody knows it’s ugly. Everybody knows it’s unseemly looking but it’s part of the election process. But let’s limit it to that 6 week period.”
He says signs on private property is a different matter.

The chair of the general government committee was going to note and file a recommendation to prepare a bylaw regulating the display of election signs but Sheldon Forgette says he’s keeping it on the committee file for further discussion.

Forgette says he’s against additional restrictions.

“In our history we’ve had soldiers die on the field to protect democracy. And part of democracy is to be able to promote your candidate and for your candidate to be be able to display their platform and themselves.”
