Near North District Board Trustees received a review this week on the board’s policy for taking students on outdoor field trips.

This is in response to a 15 year old from the Toronto area dying on a canoe trip in Algonquin Park as part of a field trip.

Board chair David Thompson says their policy is strong overall.

“There’s a protocol in place, not taking risks on weather or temperature or water conditions. Certainly, the guidelines for instructors are very clear,” he says.

Still Thompson says there are a few points that need to be addressed.

“It’s a very important priority for us to make sure our students are safe and parents understand that their kids are going to be safe when they go out on these outdoor ed programs. Because they are certainly amazing,”
he says.
