Today is World Polio Day and local Rotary clubs and Rotaract are Walking to End Polio.

The community is being invited to the event, which starts at the waterfront gazebo at 5:30 pm, then makes it’s way to the Grande Event Centre on Main for a social.

Rotary Club of North Bay President Chuck Verge says Polio has nearly been eradicated

“We’ve only got a few cases in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan. Because of conflicts in the area they’re extremely difficult to get to, to get the vaccinations to the young people,” he says.

However, Verge says they’re getting close.

“When we started 20 some years ago we had Polio all over the world, just last year we were able to officially state that there was no more Polio in Nigeria,” he says.

Ponchos will be sold ahead of today’s walk for $10, with $5 going towards the cause.

A portion of proceeds from bowls of chili being sold at the social will also go towards the cause.
