The Northeast LHIN is taking steps to help decrease the number of falls in older adults, including locally.

Officials say one in three older adults aged 65-plus fall each year.

To help reduce that number the Northeast LHIN’s Stay on your Feet strategy and the health unit are helping seniors take part in free exercise classes.

There are 61 classes lined up in 32 locations in Nipissing-Timiskaming.

Carole Orris in Corbeil is one of thousands of seniors across Northeastern Ontario who are benefiting from these NE LHIN-supported exercise classes.

The 71-year-old says the classes have given her strength and balance which she didn’t have before and also a great deal of laughter and friendship.

“Before attending the class, I was falling quite often,” said Orris. “This class has given me the tools to stay on my feet, and have great balance and flexibility.”
