With three fatal collisions in the northeast this week, claiming four lives, OPP are reminding motorists to remain diligent while traveling on regional highways in the winter.

Police say driving habits need to be adjusted.

They also say check weather and road conditions before heading out.

Safety tips include:

  • Allow extra time travelling to and from destinations in winter and slow down. Travel below the posted limit in winter driving conditions.
  • Leave ample space between vehicles. Always assume road conditions will be slippery in winter.
  • Ensure your vehicle is mechanically safe and sound.
  • Put winter tires on your vehicle.
  • Make sure your heater and defroster is working properly.
  • Check all your lights to ensure they are working including hazards lights.
  • Make sure your windows are ALL clear of ice and snow.
  • Ensure your wiper blades are in good working condition.
  • Fill up your windshield washer fluid and make sure the sprayers are working properly

Police say the weather can affect driving conditions, however, other contributing factors for vehicle collisions may include:

  • Driver error
  • Speed
  • Poor vehicle maintenance
  • Distracted driving
  • Impairment
  • Fatigue
  • Driving experience
  • Failure to use safety equipment

OPP also say travelers can obtain road conditions by calling 511 or by visiting the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) website at: www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/travellers/conditions.
