Experts say the peak of the flu season could still be a few weeks off, although infectious-disease experts are describing the season as “unusual”.

They point to the mix of two strains that are dominating this year’s flu epidemic.

Flu cases continue to spike across the country.

Dr. Michelle Murti of Public Health Ontario says the dominant influenza A strain H3N2 is still out there, but it’s mixing with the much earlier-than-usual circulation of a B strain, known as B/Yamagata.

Locally, the Health Unit’s website shows that as of January 6th there are 62 total lab-confirmed cases of the flu in the district.

Most (50) are influenza A.
