The 2016-17 snowmobile season was a deadly one and OPP and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs are urging snowmobilers to avoid risky behavior, especially on frozen waterways.

This as snowmobile week is underway.

Police say the 27 snowmobile deaths last season was the most since the winter of 2003-04.

Nine victims last year died as a result of their snowmobiles either going through the ice or entering open water.

Most area snowmobile trails are still closed while some, including the Mattawa area are limited.
