Many of areas of crime were down in North Bay in January compared to the year before.

Deputy Chief Scott Tod says that includes sexual offenses, break and enters, drug charges and total criminal offenses.

Assaults were up by 2 from 31-33 but Tod says the number of assaults cleared increased from a year ago from 28-47.

He says in many cases officers are just in the right place in the right time but that’s not all.

“The 2nd one is the use of intelligence and timely follow up on investigations. I think it’s a combination of both factors- one is luck and the other is dedication and skill,” he says.

Tod says total criminal offenses are also up by about 350.

Tod says there’s also concern that crystal meth is more in use locally.

“It’s a very easy drug to make. All you need are the precursors for it and you could manufacture the drug and sell. It’s one of the cheapest drugs available on the street and it can also be concealed rather easily,” Tod says.
Tod says they don’t have specific numbers but they’re taking notice and they’ll have to address it.
