The Foodland in South River is closing later this month.

External Communications Specialist with Sobeys Inc. Clayton Filkohazy says the last day of operations will be Saturday April 28th.

“It’s never an easy decision to close a store, particularly with the impact it has on customers, staff and the community,” he says. “Due to various operational reasons we’ve made the difficult decision to permanently close the store.”

When asked for specifics, Filkohazy said he couldn’t elaborate further.

There has been speculation about another grocery store opening in that same location.

“Any decisions related to the future use of the site will be determined by the landlord, Sobeys Inc. does not own the property,” he says.

Filkohazy says employees found out March 13th that the store was closing.
