They’ve already been named Kiwanis citizens of the year and last night the men who helped bring the 2018 Ford World Women’s Curling championship to North Bay were honoured again.

This time, the mayor presented Mark Brown, Dave Bennett and Rick Miller with plaques.

Councillor Mike Anthony says the event changed North Bay.

“They’ve shown that sports tourism is alive and well. They broke attendance records and the whole world was watching. A great success story,” he says.

Brown says thanks to the events success the North Bay Granite Club made $75,000 profit from the 50/50 draws that were held.

“We’re able to address some of the capital projects that we had to take care of. Now we have the funding to pay for those and move forward. And there’s the legacy that we now know we can use that facility for more than a curling club,” Brown says.
Miller says they were the vice chairs but so many people deserve credit too including the committee chairs, all the volunteers and city staff.

Miller says the success of the event can be a lesson to other organizations that are looking to bring a big event here.

“Because we’ve shown the city will respond and support them and they’ll be great hosts. I think it has opened other groups eyes as to what they can possibly do in the future,” Miller says.
