Five local students will be heading to Ottawa next month for the Canada Wide Science Fair. This as a result of their projects receiving recogntion at the North Bay Regional Science Fair yesterday. Jacob Galema of Widdifield Secondary School, Stephanie Wu and Matthew McParland at St Joseph-Scollard Hall and Hanna Schaefer and David Moore also of St Joseph-Scollard Hall were recognized. Over 50 awards were handed out. 155 students took part,

Jacob Galema of Widdifield Secondary School for the project “Fantastic Bioplastic” which won the Shulman Travel Award, the OPG Engineering Award, the Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council Award – Intermediate or Senior, and a gold medal in the Senior Engineering/Computer/Math Sciences category;
Stephanie Wu and Matthew McParland of St. Joseph-Scollard Hall for their project “An ironic intake on the term dropping like flies” which won the Rotary Club of North Bay Award of Excellence, the Lalonde Family Award in Biology and Medicine, and a silver medal in the Senior Life Sciences category;

and Hanna Schaefer and David Moore of St. Joseph-Scollard Hall for their project “Inhibition of telomerase by antisense therapy in Tetrahymena” which won the TransCanada Award, and a gold medal in the Senior Life Science category.
