North Bay City Council has passed a motion that calls on Ottawa to develop a national strategy so something is done about waste products and packaging in the environment.

The author of the motion is Councillor Mac Bain.

He says the problem is plastics are affecting the environment across the country so a national approach is best.

“The best way to do that is to have the federal government implement rules and regulations that affect the producers of plastics so they do a better job,” he says.
Bain says he’s not talking about companies necessarily using less plastics but using it better.

Bain says recent estimates are that there are 8 million tonnes of plastics being leaked into the ocean every year.

Bain says the province only captured 11 per cent of the plastic across the country and the rest either ends up at the landfill or in the oceans
