Some residents in the Temagami area who have been on mandatory evacuation for several days have seen their status downgraded to evacuation alert due to forest fires.

That means they can return home but may be asked to leave again if conditions meaning the forest fire situation warrants.

Other evacuation alerts remain in place and travel restrictions are in effect.

At last check, there were 66 active forest fires in the Northeast and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says 26 are not under control.

On Wednesday, there were 18 new starts.

The major concerns are at Lady Evelyn Smoothwater Provincial Park and in the Temagami area but the ministry says progress is being made on both.

The Ministry says 3 water bombers were working on one fire that originated in Lady Evelyn Smoothwater Provincial Park but it has spread outside the park boundary. The Ministry says 3 crews were out Wednesday night and 6 on Thursday.

There are also concerns about smoke drifts and the ministry advises people that if they see flames or smoke report it and stay away from the area.
