The number of forest fires burning in the northeast is up again.

After a couple days of slight declines, there are 55 active fires in the region, as of last night.

There are 24 fires that are not under control.

Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry officals say several new and existing fires needed support from air attack yesterday because of the extreme heat conditions.

They also say incoming precipitation with a low pressure system is expected to be scattered with localized thunderstorms.

Meantime, efforts continue to extinguish the fires, with five snuffed out on Sunday.

More out-of-province fire crews and support staff are making their way to Ontario, too.

There are already over 200 personnel here from other parts of the country.

The Ministry says three clusters continue to be the priority, in the River Valley area, Lake Temagami and Lady Evelyn.
