The Ontario government says a three per cent increase in social assistance payments promised by the Wynne government would be cut to 1.5 per cent as the province works on a plan to revamp the system

. In a release, The District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board says they are pleased the province is providing the 1.5 and looking at ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of social assistance in Ontario.

Boards throughout the north are requesting the province allow the management of employment services to the local boards so they can expand on employment initiatives that are effective in Northern Ontario.

Meantime, the government is cancelling the province’s basic income pilot project, suggesting the program discouraged participants from finding work.
Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod says that giving people money “with no strings attached” goes against the government’s goal of getting people back on track and making them productive members of society.
