Quite the honour for 16 year old St Joseph Hall-Scollard Hall student Emily McLaren.

The sea cadet recently spent a week on a ship in the Great Lakes.

She was on the HMCS Oriole.

Emily told Bay Today it meant a lot to her.
“My mon told me my uncle’s best friend went on that ship for 6 months. It was cool to have sort of that same experience as him. It was also cool as only 8 cadets were chosen,” Emily says.

8 from the province and 110 from across the country.

McLaren is a senior cadet with the North Bay Sea Cadet corps.
Her training officer Lorie Hall says these cadets work alongside the regular crew so it’s a great experience.

“Working along a regular force crew is an outstanding learning experience. Infact, I saw a tweet from the commanding officer of the ship that said it doesn’t cease to amaze him how quickly these cadets become part of the crew,” she says.

Emily plans to apply to Royal Military College to become an officer.
