Last week, we told you about concern from the Near North Landlords Association about damage being caused by tenants and the impact that’s having on the business of being a landlord.

Last night, city council passed a motion to that effect.

The motion authored by Councillor Mike Anthony calls on the province to provide assistance in a number of areas.

“We ask the government to look into policies that would protect landlords, we ask that they look at ways of penalizing those that cause willful damage and we look at ways to allow landlords to better recoup costs,” he says.
Anthony says stories like the one last week are being heard more often.

“It appears that we are hearing about it more often and it appears that people are getting more brazen. I think the issue is that the balance has swung too far away from giving landlords some protection,” Anthony says.
Anthony says landlords can go to small claims court but he says right now that isn’t working because you need to find the person who caused the damage in the first place.

He says tenant rights should be protected but landlords should be helped too.
The motion was sent to the premier, MPP Vic Fedeli, the landlords association and North Bay Police.
