Former Premier Mike Harris says the Doug Ford government is off to a great start.

He says there’s a lot of similarity between the Ford government and when the PC’s were elected in the mid 90’s.

“It was time to stop the bleeding, the deficit, the buildup of debt and hydro rates out of control. So far. so good. I think they’re on the right track and I’m a big supporter,” he says.

Harris made his comments at Osprey Links, the site of a fundraising golf tournament for the North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation’s Cancer Care Close to Home Campaign.

He says he’s a big supporter of Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli, pointing out Fedeli would have made a great premier.

“Sometimes things work out and sometimes they don’t. He made a big sacrifice for the party at a very significant time when the party needed some help and the party owes him a debt of gratitude for that,” Harris says.

He also says Fedeli has the experience in the legislature.

“He has been finance critic and done a great job over the last few years. He’s critical to the success of the government. I’m proud of Vic and I’m happy he’s there,” Harris says.

Mike Harris Junior was elected in June as an MPP in Kitchener and Harris Sr says he’s glad his son is following in his footsteps.

“He’s in the back row where I started out. He’s excited and enjoying it. It’s a life changing experience. He’s a little smarter and nicer than me. I think he’ll do just fine,” Harris says.
