Ontario Finance Minister and Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli says they’re ready for online sales of marijuana.

Recreational cannabis became legal at midnight across Canada. Fedeli was on CityTV’s Breakfast Television in Toronto this morning.

He says the Ontario Cannabis Store website is built with the most up-to-date technology and they’re ready.

Fedeli also points out all the data they have right now is based on illegal activity.

“There’s a certain science too it as well, but it’s all based on illegal numbers, so who’s reporting those numbers correctly is the issue, so we’re overbuilt and ready for everything,” he says.

In terms of the price, he says it’s not about making money for the province, it’s about safety and stopping the illegal market.

“At seven dollars and change a gram, with a 30 gram purchase, it’s $5 shipping we know that it is the right price point,” Fedeli says.

He was also asked about concern that rotating Canada Post strikes, which could start Monday, could impact cannabis deliveries.

“We certainly hope that the Federal Government and Canada Post come to some sort of arrangement, but we have a complete plan B in place,” Fedeli says.

Brick and mortar stores are on pace to open April 1st.

Fedeli says the opening of the licensing application will open “shortly”.
