The federal Liberals officially have their candidate in Nipissing-Timiskaming for the 2019 election.

Incumbent Anthony Rota was nominated last night (Thursday).

He says he’s honoured to have once again earned the trust of local Liberal supporters and says he will work hard to again earn the support of voters in Nipissing-Timiskaming.

Rota tells BayToday he does not expect the campaign to be pretty.

“You see it happening around the world and usually when nationalism starts picking up, it spreads. It’s like a cancer, it spreads all over and that’s something that I think we have to be careful of in Canada. It’s easy to jump on a bandwagon and be negative,” he says.

Rota says they have to remain positive.

“Tell people what we have to offer, it’s not about knocking down the other side, it’s about showing what we can do and offering a positive message,” he says.

The past Chamber president and city councillor has been elected MP four times.

Rota currently serves as the Assistant Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons and Assistant Deputy Chair of the Committees of the Whole.

During previous Parliamentary terms, he was chair of the national Liberal caucus and was a member of standing committees on national defence and veterans affairs.

He holds a master’s degree in business administration and is a real estate entrepreneur.
