Who should pay for the first date?

Actress Vanessa Hudgens thinks men should always pick up the bill at the beginning of a relationship.

She says “I’d say in the beginning, yeah, play your part,” she tells Instyle. “He [boyfriend Austin Butler] totally paid. He’s a man–take the girl out, and then pay the bill. We’ve been in a relationship almost seven years, and it’s a partnership more than a courting, so you evolve into the relationship and then figure things out logistically from there.” She continues, “But, in the beginning, I think guys should always pay for the girls. They should be gentlemanly.”

I don’t think I necessarily agree with Hudgens? Roles are changing all the time and I think it should be the person who initiates the date that ends up footing the bill. I think if you want to take someone out, then you should do just that take THEM out, not the other way around; “Hey would you like to go out with me, by the way could you pick me up and pay for everything?” that doesn’t work for me.

However, I haven’t had a first date in ten years,  so really I’m completely lost when it comes to this. I just think saying it’s TRADITION for the guy to always pay for the first few dates, is a little outdated.
