Saturday night marks the 10th annual Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey Military Appreciation Night in support of the Military Family Resource Centre.

Uniforms worn during the game between Nipissing and RMC will be auctioned off.

Manager Tessa Clermont says this game has raised over $25,000 in its first 9 editions and the money supports military families.

“In recent years there’s been a big push for our family medical clinic because families that get posted here and can’t wait out the wait list for primary care. So we have a family medical clinic on the base,” she says.

Lakers head coach Mike McParland says it’s always a hard fought game.

“They’ve improved and every game is a life and death game because they play so hard. They have a never give up attitude that is built up in our military,” McParland says.

22 Wing Commander Col. Mark Roberts says the game between Nipissing and RMC means so much to the military.

“It’s an event that the city shows appreciation for the military community. It’s one of the reasons why we feel so appreciated here. People love getting posted here because people feel so welcome in the community,” he says.

He says there are divided loyalties as personnel at the base got their training at RMC.

“We’re very torn. We want the military team to do well. But Nipissing is our home town team. So we’re hoping that Nipissing wins in overtime and each team gets a point,” Col. Roberts says.

Game time is 7:30 at Memorial Gardens.

The Lakers also host Queen’s on Friday.
