Over 2,200 pounds of tabs from aluminum cans have come in to the North Bay Rorab Shrine Club this past year.

They’re being collected to help purchase wheelchairs for kids.

President Dennis Harwood tells BayToday since putting the initiative on social media, it’s blown up.

“Facebook has just been incredible, people have seen it and of course Shrine Clubs from down south have seen it, one guy from a southern Ontario Shrine club brought up 57 pounds,” he says.

In fact, Harwood says the tabs are coming in from all over.

“We’ve got them from Cuba, Arizona, from Florida, Texas, Edmonton, British Columbia, it’s just amazing,” he says.

Locally, schools, churches and many other groups, organizations and businesses have brought in tabs.

Harwood says the goal is to collect 2,800 pounds this year.

The initiative started about four years ago.

Tabs can be dropped off at Harwood Plumbing or the Shrine Club, when they’re open.
