North Bay Police and Canadore College have signed a 4 year agreement to enhance support of Anishinabek residents and their communities.

Canadore vice president Shawn Chorney (middle of photo) says North Bay Police officers will learn about indigenous cultures through the college’s First Peoples’ Centre.

He says the agreement mean Canadore will certify several North Bay Police officers once they receive training.

“This training includes Walk A Mile training which is cross cultural competency training that all of our staff take as part of our employment. It offers mental health first aid training to better equip officers in front line responses when coming up in a situation involving mental health,” Chorney says.

He says the college will provide education sessions to be rolled out to the police service’s employee groups.

As well, the college and the police service will work together so student learning can be enhanced within the college’s school of Community Justice and Police Studies program.
