Parents and supporters of those on the autism spectrum rallied in front of Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli’s office on Friday.

They’re upset about provincially mandated program changes announced recently.

Kim Kelly Cyr told BayToday the changes as proposed will leave families short of funds needed to help their child.

She says she’s concerned about getting the needed help for her son.

“He is going to lose those behavior therapists come the beginning of summer. And we won’t be able to afford the services with the little amount of money the government is going to allot our family,” she says.

Kelly Cyr says the government believes in a cookie cutter approach when in reality every child is different and their needs change as their ages do.

“My son was diagnosed near his 3rd birthday. He is 11 now and the services he required then are drastically different that the services he requires now,” she says.

In a recent tweet, Fedeli indicated the province has developed a fair, equitable and sustainable program for all children and families.

The government says previously 23,000 children weren’t getting services because they were on a waiting list and that’s no longer the case.
