The North Bay and District Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society has handed out two community service awards for those that are having a positive impact for those fighting cancer.

Lisa Dupuis received the celebrating courage award for inspiring others.

She was honored for demonstrating exceptional courage in her experience with cancer and being a role model to others.

She says her message is it’s not all doom and gloom and focus on the silver linings.

“Something to look to whether it’s what different types of treatment options might be available through the research the Canadian Cancer Society does or provides funding for or the different programs and services that are available locally,” she says.

The other major award went to Modern College of Hairstyling and Esthetics.

The local business was recognized for working with officials on wigs that clients use in the treatment process.

The Canadian Cancer Society also handed out service pins to volunteers who have reached milestones.

The milestones range from 5-50 years.

Officials also unveiled plans for Daffodill month which is next month.

Senior Manager Gil Pharand says it starts next week.

“Our big weekend will be April 12th-14th. We’ll be out at 10 different locations in the city. We’ll have volunteers out and they’ll be collecting donations for pins,” he says.
