With the Health Unit building as the backdrop the North Bay and District Labour Council highlighted the importance of not making cuts to health care.

President Henri Giroux says the government is planning to reduce the number of health units in the north to one. He says it’s time to appreciate all the health units and the good they do in protecting the public.

“We should be thankful for the health units. To close six and have only one left will mean a lot of layoffs,” he says.

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli has said their focus is to not make any changes to front line services but there will be changes to the organizational structure of health units.

Last year, Giroux was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma. He says he’s doing great but during his battle he’s seen how important health care funding is and he doesn’t want reductions in stem cell research.

Giroux also announced plans for a Saturday march from the North Bay Museum to Fedeli’s office. The event is called Building the Resistance.
