North Bay Pride has several events lined up later this month to celebrate equality and acceptance for all.

Spokesperson Jason Maclennan says with the 50th anniversary this past weekend of the Stonewall Riots in New York, it’s important for everyone to continue to stand for equality.

“They stood up for their rights, from being oppressed, because it was a long history of oppression. We went through that in Toronto and we still, unfortunately face that in the community, through employers and you can see some of the hate groups that are showing up, there’s hate speech that goes out now,” he says. “It’s kind of disappointing that we have come so far, but now it seems we’re going backwards.”

Family is the focus with the events that are lined up.

“Whatever that family is for whoever you are,” Maclennan says. “Some people have blood families, some people have chosen families so it’s just about making sure we have a variety of events that are geared towards adults, kids and then the entire family.”
