The city is looking for public input on the potential of further restrictions on smoking at workplaces.

A consultation session goes at City Hall from 6-8 pm tonight (Wed July 3rd).

Comments and questions can also be emailed to smoking.by-law@cityofnorthbay.ca.

“Send us your questions or concerns. We are asking for any feedback you may have on smoking regulations, both existing and proposed,” said Councillor Tanya Vrebosch, Chair of Council’s General Government Committee in a release. “We encourage you to attend the open house or contact us via email.”

The city recently strengthened it’s smoking rules.

Smoking and vaping of any substance, including the use of water pipes, is now prohibited everywhere smoking is.

That includes city parks and property including trails and beaches.

There are designated smoking areas including Memorial Gardens and Pete Palangio Arena.

Streets and sidewalks are not included.

“We’re pleased to be taking this proactive step towards building a healthier community,” said Vrebosch. “There are varying viewpoints as to the appropriate scope of smoking restrictions at the municipal level, but all Council members are in agreement that the City has an important role to play in reducing exposure to second hand smoke in our public places.”

Officials say the City’s initial focus will be on education rather than enforcement.
